  • Social Learning Analytics

An article from Journal of Educational Technology & Society by Simon Shum & Rebecca Ferguson

New skills and ideas are not solely individual achievements, but are developed and passed on through interaction and collaboration. Social Learning Analytics (SLA) measures the role of social interaction in learning. Large amounts of digital data on learners’ activities and interests are studied to examine patterns of interaction and learning habits. Tools represent the information visually and help in improving learning outcomes, providing students a sense of their progress and guiding educators to intervene in a timely manner. Online learning data can be examined, indexed and filtered to guide learners through the ocean of potential resources available to them.

  • Student Experience in a Student-Centered Peer Instruction Classroom

An article from Skidmore College, New York by Beth Simon et al.

The teaching model of Peer Instruction involves students explaining the core concepts to each other. When students attempt to articulate their understanding of the problem and solution, they learn the concepts and their application. In a variety of studies, this approach has been shown to improve learning twofold over the standard lecture format. This report provides an evaluation of student experiences in a Peer Instruction course. Analysis of students’ role in the new teaching model demonstrates that students are interactive by arguing, discussing, explaining to peers.
